First of, make sure you know what it is going to be about.
Who your audience is ?
and Why your site is what they want?
But it is very important that you know your audience, for example the older people you’ll be looking at a website that’s easy to read and is not to much on the eyes whereas the younger audience you’ll be looking at the complete opposite, very eye catching with almost nothing to read.
But it is important to aim your site instead of just making it to suit yourself.
What may seem simple to you may not to others, you may understand how to navigate your website but then, you would , you made it.
Remember that pictures and videos can be fun but they also slow down your page loading time which is arguably the most important thing, music on WebPages (and I can’t stress this enough) is a No No,
It is very annoying and the first reaction is to just close the page or click back,
Not everyone will have the same taste as you and a lot of people search the web as the listen to the TV or Radio and do not want your tasteless music spat in there face.
Loading time as I said before is arguably the most important thing,
A page that takes to long to load can cause people to get frustrated and lose interest in your page,
Also if I may just turn to the Psychology side of web design, People are very put of by slow loading pages, the same goes for unloaded images (or ‘broken’ images) and links that don’t go anywhere (or ‘broken’ links)
It makes the viewer feel they are at a amateur or ghost (Ghost site is a website that was made many years ago and has not been touched since, like an unmanned site) site and therefore any information on there is unreliable or potentially incorrect.
An unprofessional looking site will never get any credibility or interest.
One final note:
“Less is More”
Trust me on this one, it took me some time to realise this but it really is true,
A webpage that loads up fast makes the viewer very happy,
Its amazing the different it makes and how clean the site looks also has an unnoticed impact,
It makes them clearer minded and focused and therefore more able and willing to proceed in reading your site
